During Dutch Design Week 2013, Design Academy Eindhoven continue it's tradition of showing the thesis projects from students who graduated in December 2012 and June 2013. With the theme of Self Unself, creative director Thomas Widdershoven is asking visitors to explore the tensions that exisits between ‘I’ and ‘we’ in contemporary design. What is role does individualism play for today's designers and how do they value the collective? This year's show will be curated by Jan Konings in direct collaboration with Widdershoven.
The Design Academy Eindhoven graduates are prodimentaly developing socials designs that help society. Some project stand out: Luc van Hoeckels Single Spark offers Ugandan war victims increased independence with a do-it-yourself package to produce things like bread or ointments. Renée Scheepers’ Mapping Cancer Care helps cancer patients by making their treatment more understandable. Willem van Doorn returned to the farm where he grew up to explore the possibilities for generating energy from waste and used materials, and became self-sufficient with Illumination By Digestion. Every design has its own balance between ‘I’ and ‘we’.
Outside of the Design Academy Eindhoven, Thomas Widdershoven has also come across designs matching the theme Self Unself. “I want to research it within the museological context of the Van Abbe Museum. I am showing Hella Jongerius' KLM project, because it's the first time sees vetured otuside of culture. I am curious to find out how much of herself she sacrifices and how much of herself she is able to retain when working with a client who has such a strong identity.”
