Between Two
by Catherine Aitken & Eva Malschaert
The show includes a small sampling of works in progress, which encourage visitors to touch, sit on and play with the projects. 'We hope to show that textiles as a discipline can reach many directions,’ says Aitken. ‘It’s a broad-ranging discipline based on material exploration, colour and tactile experience.’ The two are currently students in the textile department at the Royal College of Art. They say their collection experiments with tactile materials and produces forms for both design and architectural space. ‘We aim to make work that triggers a subtle, quiet and emotional response,’ Malschaert adds. ‘Work that can be touched and touches you back.’ Malschaert says she is interested in how people use spaces. ‘We all need to be alone sometimes to find silence and concentration, but equally important are the moments of meeting, moving and interacting with others,’ she says. Her designs mix bright colours and tactile textiles to invite the viewer to interact with the piece. Meanwhile, Aitkens says living and recreational spaces need to be more versatile, reflective of personal lives, and offer the opportunity for socialization and solitude. Her 'Between Two' designs include soft felt, wooden dowelling and make for total organization with the options to stack, roll, layer or bundle. The duo will be showing at the RCA Milan later this year. 'Between Two' will be on display at Studio fiftyfour until 6 February.
