Frame's Pick of the Day: Friday

Throughout Dutch Design Week, in Eindhoven from 20 to 28 October 2012, Frame will recommend the best exhibition or event to see every single day. You can also read our Pick of the Day in the daily DDW newspaper.

Exhausted from a week of exhibitions, events and installations? Celebrate the coming weekend (and two more days of non-stop design) with a beer and a sit-down meal at Radio Royaal.

Don’t worry that you’re missing out by taking an hour or two to relax. The restaurant is a bonafide Dutch Design Week baby – and eating there is an event in itself.

The restaurant was created by Niels Wouter, Bart Gardenier and Stella Birsak as a pop-up restaurant during last year’s events. But they loved the space – an old Philips factory – so much that they decided to set up shop permanently.

Eschewing a ‘professional’ designer, they outfitted the space themselves with chairs from school canteens, leather sofas, and spare portraits of food by Rene Mesman.

But the beauty of the location is what’s been left behind: industrial machinery, exposed metal beams, and a century-old, chequered tile floor. This hands-off, pared-down approach retains the history, and the industrial aesthetic, of Eindhoven’s Strijp-S.

“Everything’s beautiful,” says Wouters of the location's design appeal. “90% of it was already here.”

The location has received plenty of attention, and will be featured in Issue 90 of Frame, in January 2013 - and as an added bonus, the food is great, too.
