Uncovering the Future

With a tiled surface that’s mysterious and futuristic, the Russian pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale is receiving a lot of attention.

Designed by architecture firm SPEECH Tchoban & Kuznetsov, the space is entirely covered in QR codes, thus allowing visitors to actively explore the projects on show using iPads – like postmodern archaeologists.

Of course the necessary interaction, typical of QR codes, makes the experience more demanding to lazy passer-bys, but at the same time the playfulness of unveiling the hidden content highlights the exploratory aspect of the visit. Digital features and glowing tiles aside, the installation’s geometric aesthetic also has a sort of timelessness to it.
