Pass the Baton
by Wonderwall
Part of an up-and-coming industry in Japan, the retail chain sells fashionable pre-loved, vintage and antique items. Its latest location – in Tokyo’s Omotesando area – boasts an interior that distinguishes the shop from its counterparts. The focus of the space is a giant chandelier made from stacked china teacups, and the theme of passing on personal objects to new owners is expressed throughout the gallery-like environment, whetting the customer’s appetite for browsing. Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall, who designed the brand’s first store, situated in the city’s Marunouchi district, once more jumped on board. Pass the Baton projects are ideal for a guy who loves collecting antiques and curios. Katayama reveals that in creating this interior he ‘intentionally left inconsistencies in the design intact’ rather than aiming for a faultlessly uniform look. Text by Masaaki Takahashi
