Ron van der Ende
Dutch Sculpture Artist
Rotterdam-based sculptor Ron van der Ende uses recycled wood to create wall mounted bas-reliefs.
‘My studio is filled with old doors and planks I’ve found in the trash,’ van der Ende says. ‘I get my visual input from photos, the internet and flea market finds. I have collected thousands of images that all represent some idea, starting point or specific possibility. This is the base that I work from.’
He says he begins by deconstructing the wood pieces using a sawing bench, leaving the original colour and texture intact. He then builds the pieces to create 3D objects, which are large but almost lie almost flat against a wall.
‘The realism and 3D effects are created by combining a host of painterly and sculptural techniques,’ van der Ende says.
Van der Ende’s work will be shown at the Boijmans-van Beuningen Museum from 11 February to 20 May, 2012. He’s also planning a solo show at Los Angeles’ Ambach & Rice gallery in later 2012.
