Stealth Barn

by Carl Turner Architects

What was once a barn is now a guest house and studio in Cambridgeshire, England.

The structure rests next to another former barn, which now houses the main home and another studio. Carl Turner Architects had the daunting job to redesign both spaces; the Stealth Barn rests perpendicular to its neighbour, creating a more sheltered space and garden.

‘It is a bold, simple form, reminiscent of the barn it accompanies,’ says architect Carl Turner. ‘Stealth Barn pays respect to the form of the agricultural context but contrasts with the traditional barn.’

A solid black volume in the middle of field land, the structure has a robust exterior that lacks any ornate detail. Inside, the space is a maze of OSB wood, which covers almost every wall, floor and ceiling to pay homage to the hay bales that were once in the same spots.
