Temporary Cinema Pavilion by OMA
Pop-up Pyramid Promotes Immersive Movie Experience
A collaboration between Kanye West and Rem Koolhaas’ OMA resulted in a pop-up pyramidal pavilion housing a seven-screen cinema. It was designed to show West’s debut short film, Cruel Summer, at the recent 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
Donda, West’s creative team, specially developed the seven-screen cinema to draw the audience’s full attention and literally wrap the movie around the viewer.
OMA cooperated with a local production team named Ar’Scene to design the temporary pavilion, which was based on a triangular steel structure that perfectly rendered the movie’s projection and soundtrack. The audience approached the cinema, which was located on Palm Beach, on a red carpet, which widened into a 200-seat auditorium.
