Vertical Village Exhibition
by MVRDV & The Why Factory
As eastern Asia is rapidly expanding, an exhibit in Taipei is exploring its urban transformations to suggest alternative architectural solutions.
Vertical Village examines the qualities of urban villages and consequences of identical block architecture. As giant towers resemble blocks and slabs rising above cities, more traditional lower and small-scale architecture is disappearing.
‘The exhibition offers an alternative, contemporary three-dimensional community that brings personal freedom, diversity, flexibility and neighbourhood life back into East Asian – and maybe even Western – cities,’ says Dutch firm MVRDV, which created the project with The Why Factory.
The exhibit includes analytical research, a grid of models, films, software, documentary and 6m tall installation of a possible vertical village. Guests are invited to design their ideal house or village using parametric software.
The exhibit can be visited until 8 January, 2012, at the Chung Shan Creative Hub in Taipei. It has been supported by the JUT Foundation for Arts and Architecture, Delft University of Technology and the Netherlands Architecture Funds.
