4 Habitats by Suh Architects
The overuse of plastics in consumer industries has stained the material’s reputation irrevocably, yet as the 3D-printed canal house shows (Frame 99, p. 47), the strength, durability and recyclability of plastic offer exciting possibilities for architecture, construction and beyond. Suh Architects’ work for the Kolon Corporation is another poetic illustration of what plastic can do.
Kolon, South Korea’s largest outdoor-clothing brand, has been developing great ways to combat the elements for 60 years. Suh Architects spent two years investigating the full potential of Kolon’s fibres, films and textiles, leading to an installation showcasing Kolon’s colour-printed Spunbond (flexible sheeting made from PET).
