Beyond the Hill by acaa
CHIGASAKI – Based in the Japanese coastal city of Chigasaki, architect Kazuhiko Kishimoto of acaa aims to produce contemporary and conscious designs. Beyond the Hill – a recently completed residential house by acaa – challenges the boundaries of the public realm.
By raising the structure above the steep slope of the site, acaa created a sheltered, yet engaging, wooden tiered terrace underneath. While it serves as a locus for social interactions, the space preserves its role as an essential transitional area, an initial threshold between interior and exterior spaces.
Living and working areas are accessible via different external staircases. The house’s flexible open plan accommodates a spacious kitchen and living room, laid out in a dynamic way on multiple levels. A large triangular window fills the family areas with bright and warm natural light.
