Brooklyn-based design collective The Principals has created a responsive installation that’s simple enough to be taught to students.

Thanks to the crafty use of movement sensors, Cosmic Quilt responds to movement by undulating and continuously altering its volume. By filtering the room’s lighting, the changing arrangement also generates hypnotic patterns all over the floor.

The project was realized as a workshop with 20 students from the Art Institute of New York City, but it was participatory in more than one way. The Principals raised the necessary funding with a Kickstarter campaign. Donors were promised goodies of varying size, from postcards to a Cosmic Quilt-inspired table.
