Contemporary art has always been on the agenda at Goldsmiths University — from it’s famed art school to the student alumni who include Sam Taylor Wood and Anthony Gormley. Plans have just been announced to build a gallery on Goldsmith’s South London campus. The space will be designed to incorporate two Victorian water tanks on the University’s Lewisham site.

Over 70 architectural firms made bids for the project, judged by Sir David Chipperfield, with the architectural firm Assemble winning the £1.9m commission. If Goldsmiths' artistic history is anything to go by — no less than 23 Turner Prize nominated artists attended the institution — this new creative hub will draw contemporary art fans to Lewisham in no time.

Goldsmith’s art gallery will open in 2016.
