Hangzhou Broadway Cinemas
While film editors splice movie slides to form a film, designers at Alex Choi patched together various spaces to create a movie theatre.
The Broadway Cinemas are in Hangzhou, spanning four levels inside a high-end shopping mall. The twists and turns between its rooms served as inspiration for the designers, who created differing aesthetics level by level.
Inspired by vintage rolls of movie film, Choi created undulating grooves along the ceiling. ‘The ribbons fly through the space, connecting all the parts that were sprinkled on different floors,’ Choi says. ‘This feature element also created flow that indicates the direction to the cinema.’
Guests can access the theatre via a large escalator that breaks through the centre of the space. Outside of the theatres, space is bright and white; inside, dark walls and muted tones emphasize the ambiance of film watching.
