A parking garage in Madrid has replaced traditional dim lighting and monochromatic concrete walls with refreshing bright colours and prints.

‘Underground spaces are the new living spaces of our society,’ explains architect Teresa Sapey. ‘We have the obligation of dignify and not denigrate them.’

Sapey says she was wanted to turn a typical dull garage into an urban tunnel, filled with abstract patterns that could be seen differently pending the angle of approach.

‘I thought of the people who use the parking lot every day, queuing on this ramp,’ Sapey recalls. ‘I wanted to make them smile, captivating their eyes with the geometric patterns and dreams.’
