Today’s photo essay includes a visual illustration of the exhibition Louisiana Contemporary – Tara Donovan, which is currently on display just north of Copenhagen at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. The book editors at Frame Publishers – currently working on a new edition of Materiology – are always inspired by the way simple materials can be given a new lease of life depending on the setting, which makes this exhibition a must-see.

American artist Donovan is interested in the aesthetic potential and the constructive capacity of the material, as well as its texture, which she exploits to the full to form her unique sculptural universe. Plastic drinking straws, curled-up metallic foil sheets and stacks of simple buttons are manipulated into monuments akin to natural phenomena. She accumulates hundreds, thousands or hundreds of thousands of identical elements to produce abstract forms that seem to be transformed into everything from clouds, crystals and corals to cell structures. The results are simply breathtaking.

The exhibition now runs until 28 July.
