Raw Color at Otis
The graduate work that features in all the titles of Frame's Masterclass series is nothing short of awe inspiring! Here we take a trip to Los Angeles for a sneak peek in on a workshop, the outcome of which features in Masterclass: Graphic Design.
The designers of Raw Color, Eindhoven-based Daniera ter Haar and Christoph Brach, were invited to Otis College of Art and Design by the programme leader Kali Nikitas to give a lecture and a 3-day workshop this summer. During Otis Design Week 2013 in Los Angeles, a group of MFA Graphic Design students worked on posters representing the country that was assigned to them. The posters needed to cover the character, facts, people, culture, etc. of the various countries. In addition, every participant got three ingredients that had to be implemented in their design and, for the execution, digital printing was combined with silkscreen and letterpress to add some extra tactility to the designs.
The photos from the workshop that are featured here speak for themselves, and the student whose work appears in the book is Daniel Chang. He was assigned the country of South Africa and his posters combined three ingredients to create a national identity for the country.
He found this type of workshop experience one of the most valuable aspects from his time at Otis and comments, ‘Aside from the core curriculum, the range and depth of visiting artists are extraordinary. This list is broad and global in scope. I found this exposure incredibly valuable in advancing and expanding my perspective and understanding of design.’ He goes on to summarise what future students can expect from Otis, ‘The variety of voices and practices you will be exposed to will challenge and expand your own practice of and possibilities for design. Come open and willing to be stretched, pulled, pushed, confronted, supported and encouraged to identify and nurture a practice that is authentic to your interests.’
