GMUNDEN – A store expansion resulted in an original redesign of the surrounding public space as its façade became an item of urban furnishing.

Austrian studio Archinauten turned the enlargement of a branch of the supermarket chain Spar in Gmunden, Austria, into a fun spatial intervention by curving the store’s new concrete façade into a park bench which ‘invites visitors to enjoy the panorama of the lake and the sunshine.’

The line between interior and exterior, commercial establishment and public space is further blurred through the use of glass in the side façades, as the lateral glazing allows the interior and the contour of the old building to remain visible from the outside.
