For the dance performance Maria XXX by Heike Hennig and Co., Minkus Architects created a stage set based on the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa in Rome, by Bernini. The show concentrates on our preconceived images of femininity, and takes the symbol of the Virgin Mary as a starting point. The backdrop is made up of the pixelated face of Saint Teresa, an image widely regarded as an example of the relationship between religiosity, lust and cruelty. The magnified picture, which is made up of 2000 paper pixels, was applied onto a triptych that forms the backdrop of the stage. The pixelated image refers to the blurring of criminal offenders and pornographic content in today’s media.
