After their initial plan – to set up 2,000 books in a main avenue in Manhattan – was thwarted by funding and licensing issues, Luzinterruptus managed to make literature win the battle against New York traffic on a slightly smaller scale. On an early morning in February, they set up 800 books and their corresponding lights under Brooklyn Bridge in Water Street, bringing traffic to a standstill. Another in their series of ‘guerilla light installations’, they followed their favoured process of grabbing a team of friends to get on board to help make it all happen. The installation, which took two days to set up off-site, is the first step in what they hope will be a successful battle against traffic in the city.
