For the past 66 years, the German Design Council has been demonstrating that the intelligent strategic use of design can drive brand value in valuable ways. To make its point, it has made good use of some very good design, along with some star-making design competitions. One of the world's leading promoters of design, innovation, industry and branding – even beyond German borders – the Council has more than 320 brand-members in its founding circle alone.

Starting in early November, the organization announced that registration had opened for entry into its ein&zwanzig competition. The purpose of the annual competition is to promote international design and design talent by inviting up-and-coming lifestyle and interior student-designers to apply at no cost. This year, the application period continues from early November through 24 January 2020.

An international jury of prominent experts will award prizes to 21 outstanding works, including 20 'Winners' and one 'Best of the Best' winner. After jurying, the Council will host an award ceremony and exhibition opening on 20 April 2020, at via Tortona, 31 in Milan during the Salone del Mobile. The award-winning work will then be exposed to tens of thousands of fair-goers from around the world from 21-26 April.  Exposure for winners during the fair can be extremely valuable, but they also gain access to the German Design Council's extensive network of foundations, friends and family.

In recent years, celebrated creatives who have designed the exhibition have included, in 2017, Hamburg studio Besau-Marguerre, in 2018, Danish designer Nina Bruun and, in 2019, Studiopepe designers Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto.
