White Drama by Comme des Garçons
Inflatable displays add a dreamlike ambience to White Drama, a Comme des Garçons fashion exhibition. The transparent domes currently display the fashion brand's Spring/Summer 2012 collection at Les Docks-Cité de la Mode et du Design in Paris.
During its renovation, Musée Galliera is using the fashionable Jakob + MacFarlane-designed venue to hold exhibitions.
After seeing Comme des Garçons’ emotive runway show, museum curator Olivier Saillard gave CDG's Rei Kawakubo carte blanche to reinterpret the collection for a static environment. She's presenting her clothing brand’s pure-white ceremonial collection – which dramatizes birth, marriage and death – within a series of transparent domes.
An intriguing set of spaces within space, the showcases were realized in collaboration with BubbleTree, a manufacturer of inflatable, habitable tents (see Frame #75, p. 028). Catering to the needs of Comme des Garçons, the tents are equipped with two small electric turbines that supply a steady flow of air. Airlocks keep the domes inflated.
White Drama can be seen until 7 October at Les Docks - Cité de la Mode et du Design.
