Bioplastic Fantastic by Johanna Schmeer

Johanna Schmeer recently graduated from the RCA.

Royal College of Art graduate Johanna Schmeer’s Bioplastic Fantastic project focuses on new products that could result from material innovations in the fields of bio- and nanotechnology.

Speculating on the possibilities of products made from enzyme-enhanced bioplastics, Schmeers created seven products, each producing various nutrients and energy – such as protein, fibre and vitamins – needed by humans.

The resulting objects are strange, yet alluring, reflecting Schmeer’s desire for the products to be part of a new type of ‘biologically-influenced domestic space’ using an aesthetic that veers away from the scientific theme.
