Is Switzerland still a viable place for designers to practice and produce new work? In September, five seminal Swiss designers came together to analyze the country’s design culture. Their discussions were fully documented in an primary publication and now, further explored at Depot Basel with Changes Chancen. The new photography exhibition highlights generational differences.
Claudia Mareis moderated the debate between five Swiss designers – Verena Huber, Claude Lichtenstein, Jörg Boner, Stefan Rechsteiner and Meret Probst – from different generations and professional backgrounds. Together, they examined a variety of issues including the role of cultural heritage, politics, education, self image, marketing, national and international recognition. With added editorial commentary, the publication sheds new light on these questions but is intended to spark further discourse.
Whereas the debate and publication focused on knowledge exchange, the Changes Chancen exhibition expresses the physical transition between generations. Five photographers captured esoteric memories – moments shared by people and their objects. These photos place heirlooms within contemporary settings.
The exhibition runs from 23 November to 18 December.
