At Frame Lab, Paul Skinner speaks on how to face the possibly post-human future

Amsterdam – On 21 and 22 February, the most exciting and innovative creatives, brands, designs and ideas from around the world will converge at Frame Lab. As part of the two-day design summit on the future of spaces, Tellart creative director Paul Skinner will be giving a lecture on the future that humanity is developing for itself.

21 February 2018 | 10:40-11:10 | Do We Want This Future? Technology vs the Human Race

‘Within living memory, there were no televisions in our homes,’ says Paul Skinner. The breakneck pace of technological development is astonishing and exponential, and threatens and promises to revolutionize every aspect of our lives. ‘We are faced with the daunting realization that technology may eventually overtake humans,’ says Skinner, citing major disruptive factors such as synthetic biology and artificial intelligence.

Yet faced by this nebulous and alien future, Skinner is prepared to demonstrate that technology can be controlled as a meaningful tool to serve the human experience. ‘When we started Tellart [in 2000], one of the key principles we all agreed on was to treat data, software and electronics no differently than wood, plastic, fabric and glass. They are all materials.’

He gives the example of designing beyond the screen in digitally integrated environments. ‘All our projects include digital technology, but as part of a three-dimensional immersive environment. We don’t do projects using only screens. In fact, we very rarely have screens at all.’

‘Humans are of the physical world. We perceive things physically and so, for us, the materials and shapes of physical objects used for storytelling are as important, or perhaps more important, than what’s communicated via screens.’
