Most of us have been through one and most of us wish we could go back. Kindergarten schools are the foundation of our education and where the day is filled only with colours, imagination, and a whole lot of fun. Although school may be out right now, we can still dream of naps and playtime in these five projects that bring out the kid in us all.  

Japan's architecture is for the children of the future

FUNABASHI – In Funabashi, situated only 40 km from Tokyo in Japan’s Chiba prefecture, Aisaka Architects’ Atelier has created a naturally stimulating playground for 160 children. This kindergarten is for the children Japan desperately needs in the future.

School Complex in Zaragoza by Magén Arquitectos

ZARAGOZA – A new school complex in Zaragoza, Spain, was built on the ‘pedagogical values of teaching spaces’. Spanish studio Magén Arquitectos used the ‘sensorial relationship between children and architecture’ to design this school that houses different educational levels for children from three to 12-years-old.

ANTWERP – The Vlaams Bouwmeester – the official government architect of Flanders – has held biannual competitions since the creation of the office in 1999 as one means of consolidating the region’s often disorderly governance in town planning. A recent call for a new nursery school to serve the Antwerp municipality of Bonheiden stands as a prominent example.

FREDERIKSBERG – The new Smørblomsten Kindergarten in Frederiksberg is designed by COBE as a caricature of how a child might draw a house, with seamless black and white forms and a skyline of simple pitched roofs.

Eco-inspired education centre by (se)arch splits into two child-friendly modules

TUBINGEN – Education is the flavour of the day for a small university town in south Germany. Stuttgart-based architecture firm (se)arch won a competition back in 2011 to build a new education centre just outside the medieval city.
