After turning sea waste into furniture and human hair into eyewear, Studio Swine has a new trick: transforming metal into foam. Well, sort of. Metallic Geology is a range of cabinets that start life as simple sheets of aluminium. The sheets are melted down before being injected with a gassing agent, which morphs them into a lightweight material that looks for all intents and purposes like lava rock. It’s not that strange, really, as the process mimics what goes on inside a volcano. Studio Swine hopes the resulting pieces of furniture will draw attention to the versatility (and recyclability) of aluminium as a material for use in the world of design.
