PARIS – Mikou Design Studio envisaged a balance of energy – inspired by the Chinese philosophical system Feng Shui – for its health club design. Offering swimming facilities, a spa and a fitness centre, the building is a retreat within the bustling streets of Paris.
A double-layered skin creates depth-defining façades. The concrete inner layer offers a protective base upon which sinuous timber adornments are secured. Inspired by the elliptical patterns created on the surface water, the timber slats appear to ripple up the building’s façades. The architect explains, ‘We designed the building’s envelope to attenuate the linear effect of the massing and to introduce a variation in the visual perception according to the viewing angle’.
The balance-of-energy concept characterises the interior – where sharp angles are avoided – generating a smooth flow of circulation throughout the building. Each function is housed within a separate round-edged form enabling open and accessible façades. Skylights and high level windows permit natural light to illuminate the interior whilst ensuring a high level of privacy is attained.
