On a tropical trip in Reykjavik with fashion designer Tanja Levý during DesignMarch

As an antidote to the lack of sunshine during those deep, dark winter months in the very far north, Tanja Levý turned her attention to creative pursuits in crafting her new fashion collection that is as bright and bold as it is colourful.

Synodic Tropic was launched at a pop-up show in a shopping centre during the Icelandic design festival DesignMarch, which took place earlier this month, and the collection certainly offers a dose of tropical fever to banish those winter blues. Under a glass-roofed ceiling, the scenography of the launch event created a pool-party-type atmosphere, the perfect backdrop to the digitally-printed designs.

The inspiration for this collection came in response to the artist's affliction of seasonal affective disorder. 'Synodic is the period required for an object to complete a single orbital, returning to the same position observing from another object,' Levý explains. 'So this tropical daydream goes through the whole circle; you want to escape reality, you daydream but something wakes you up to your bitter reality of everyday life.'

A graduate of the Reykjavik School of the Visual Arts, Levý's new range of clothes follows on from the success of her involvement in DesignMarch 2015 (which caught our attention, see here), as she commented in a recent interview, 'During the dark cold winter days, we need art therapy so we don’t suffer from depression or get really bored. That’s exactly what happened to me when I participated in DesignMarch last year, I forgot to be unproductive and depressed because I was so excited for exhibiting the collection.'

DesignMarch is organised each year by the Iceland Design Centre and to discover other such Icelandic talents and read reports from the recent event, keep an eye on the organisation's social media streams (here and here), as well as the HA magazine's blog.
