Out for Space rethinks rattan and produces a strong workable material

Out for Space added colour to the capillaries of rattan.

Finishes grab the eye, but it’s often what’s inside that counts. This was made evident by creative collective Out for Space, which presented Karuun – a reinvention of rattan – at Salone Satellite 2015. The team infuses the long capillaries of rattan’s slender stems with protective bulking agents to strengthen and stabilize the natural material. Debuting at this year’s fair, Out for Space’s KC collection – a series of household items ‘premiering Karuun color’ – received a Salone Satellite Honourable Mention for the fresh potential that jury members saw in the material’s advanced aesthetic.
