New York City – As we reported in last week’s NYCxDesign roundup, large lifestyle brands are deepening their presence in the city’s flagship design celebration – a tangible indicator of the growing importance of the event in the global industry’s calendar.
Case in point? Luxury car brand Lexus. After their run at this year’s Milan Design Week – their 12th consecutive one – with Rhizomatiks for the interactive Leading with Light, the Japanese automaker has teamed up with Snarkitecture to create a new immersive installation stateside, to coincide with the design week.
Titled Sway, the tactile environment is set up in INTERSECT, the gallery-cum-restaurant-cum-culturalia the brand set up in the Meatpacking District. There, via a clever use of mirrors, the Snarkitecture team created an infinite tulip field made up of 168 responsive LED spheres, which change hue and intensity when touched. Each orb is mounted on a flexible sway pole – hence the name of the installation – that allow the pieces to respond in kind to the physical presence of visitors.
