The Great Indoors Award: CH+QS

CH+QS celebrate their win at The Great Indoors Awards.

Over the course of the week we’ll be sharing a few words from the winners of each of the four categories of The Great Indoors Award: Show & Sell, Relax & Consume, Concentrate & Collaborate, and Serve & Facilitate. Today we hear from Churtichaga+Quadra-Salcedo Arquitectos, the studio responsible for Cineteca Matadero and winners of the Serve & Facilitate category.

How does it feel to win?
Josemaría de Churtichaga: It feels great! It was a huge surprise for us, especially considering the amazing projects that were nominated. We were very honoured to be the only office with two projects selected!

How do you feel your project differs from its competitors?
We think the others in our category were really strong, and it was nice to meet the amazing firms behind them. Maybe we had a different kind of ‘attitude’, or atmosphere, that aligned well with the theme: the nature of things. But who knows? The Canberra project [Nishi Grand Stair by March Studio] was also very aligned with that. This kind of question should be judged by the public. We do have to say, however, that for some mysterious reason the project has received six prizes, which must mean its visually expressive.

What did you think of The Great Indoors as an event?
The event was extraordinarily generous in all senses: a fantastic city, diverse activities, warm people, great hotel rooms and, of course, a huge prize! What else can we ask for? Maybe, just as a suggestion, a less formal dinner while the prizes are being given out could work – some kind of tapas party. Next year in Madrid, perhaps?

What’s next for Churtichaga+Quadra-Salcedo Arquitectos?
A huge wine estate in Argentina, a housing project in New York and a secret project in Mallorca.

About the project:
Ignoring the cinematic potential offered by the conversion of a slaughterhouse into a movie theatre, CH+QS came up with an interior that is more fantasy than horror. Steel frames interwoven with irrigation hoses and tube lighting conjure an experience that seduces the senses. According to the jury, Cineteca Matadero is ‘a commendable technical insertion in an old building, showing the architects’ genuine understanding of what it means to go to the movies’.
