U-Bahnhof by Pfarré Lighting Design

Pfarré Lighting Design created a lighting installation for a Hamburg subway station.

Inspired by the bustling nearby harbour, Pfarré Lighting Design created an interactive lighting installation in the HafenCity-Universität subway station in Hamburg.

The 12 ‘lighting containers’ have the same dimensions as the 6.5-m shipping containers in the harbour and are lined with LED lights, the designers say.

The lighting systems use the reflection of bright colours against the otherwise austere station to mirror the containers and steel hulls of the shipping vessels. The lights are designed to interact with the station, changing to reflect weather patterns, time of day and arriving or departing trains.

But for bored commuters, the installation's purpose will likely be simple – a welcome distraction.
