When asked to design a courtyard for a housing project in Copenhagen, Denmark, landscape architects 1:1 Landskab wanted to create a meeting space with a cozy and intimate feel. To recreate the living room atmosphere outside, the architects needed to add some colour to the wide-open space. They decided to use the oriental rug, as found in many traditional interiors, as a starting point. To find the right pattern, the designers went on a walk through some of Copenhagen’s older parts, looking to the brick engravings found in buildings for inspiration. Simplifying the examples they found, 1:1 Landskab ended up with a yellow-and-black pattern, much like that seen on oriental rugs. By using different coloured bricks, the courtyard seems like a more personal space.
